Welcome to Heroes Into Homes
Should the words Homeless and Veteran be in the same sentence? We don't think so either. We are here to help.
Should the words Homeless and Veteran be in the same sentence? We don't think so either. We are here to help.
Heroes Into Homes is a non-profit charitable organization focused on lifting our military veterans to a new level. We provide direction, purpose, basic needs and resources to further their future and improve their quality of life.
Have you have ever thought or said, " there should be no homeless Veterans" but never knew how to help, this is a way for you to help us help them.
Heroes Into Homes is a 501C3 nonprofit Veteran assistance organization that helps homeless Veterans into homes. Working directly with the VA and VA HUD/VASH ( https://www.va.gov/homeless/hud-vash.asp ) counselors in Lincoln Nebraska in a coordinated effort between many other organizations, Heroes Into Homes has a goal to supply new and gently used furnishings and everything needed to turn an empty apartment into a home for formerly homeless Veterans.
When the VA HUD/VASH counselors get a homeless veteran off the streets and into an apartment, they usually only have a few clothes to their name and nothing else. This is where Heroes Into Homes comes in.
We supply the Veteran with new and gently used items like a bed, bedding, pillow, blankets, dresser, end tables, lamps, couch, kitchen table and chairs, plates, cups, glasses, cooking utensils, pots, pans, cleaning supplies, laundry soap, bath soap, towels, hand towels, wash cloths. We also give them some groceries and other necessities they may need.
We can only do this with the help of the community.
With our communities help we have been able to turn all 70 apartments at the new Victory Park Complex on the Lincoln VA campus into homes. The complex was at capacity within 6 months of opening, but there is constant turnover for various reasons like any other apartment complex. Everything that is in the apartment belongs to the veteran and they can take it with them if they move. As a result, we continue to refurnish the units for the next tenant with the basics and groceries.
We wouldn’t leave anybody behind on the battlefield, and we will not leave anybody behind at home.
The 3rd Thursday of each month HIH has a food and products pantry (Products generously donated by Elks Lodge #80) at Victory Park Apartments for those that are 0 - very limited income.

Recently we have had several large furniture donations and our storage facilities are over full. Therefore as of right now July 15th 2018 we can not accept any more donations of any large funiture items . Currently even our trailer is loaded with no where to put anything .
However we do always need groceries for the pantry. Below is a list of most requested grocery items .
Well folks.....it's been a while since we've updated! Exciting things have been happening!!!!!
VICTORY PARK is almost full!!! By the end of this month, 67 veterans will have homes. There has been some turn over in tenants for various reasons so we have re-supplied a few apartments to get them ready again for the next tenant.
Since the beginning of the project, we have been asking for a garden space for the tenants. Guess what......a garden is now in the works! The approval was received a little late in the gardening season but hey, things can still be planted and it will definitely be ready next spring!! The veterans are very excited about this too!
Due to the fact that none of the HEROES INTO HOMES staff have enough extra time or needed expertise, we put it out there to ask for a volunteer from the community to head up this effort. We were fortunate to get Mike Shambaugh-Miller with Produce From the Heart to take the lead on this. He is still in need of volunteers for all sorts of things, so please feel free to contact him @ producefromtheheart@gmail.com.
THANK YOU MIKE FOR TAKING THE LEAD ON THIS AND MAKING THIS VISION INTO A REALITY FOR OUR VETERANS!!
We have also started a food pantry!!!!! The third Thursday of every month from 7-8 pm, we open the pantry for the veterans to shop for the items they need! WHAT A HIT!!!!! They are so grateful and happy to have this service. So many of them do not have transportation to get to the other food banks and some have mobility issues so it's nice to have this right there in the commons area of VICTORY PARK not to mention their limited income prevents them from purchasing expensive items like meats, milk, cheese, and eggs.
We have been blessed with having LINCOLN ELKS LODGE #80 present on pantry nights too! They have donated and distributed hygiene products and cleaning supplies! This is truly wonderful and much needed so THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH LINCOLN ELKS LODGE #80!!
After our last food pantry, our shelves are quite bare so if you would like to donate any food, coffee, drink mixes etc., I know those veterans would be very appreciative.
None of this can be done without our AMAZING community.
We are still in negotiations with various vendors to purchase food at a discounted price but we would like it to be donated. Better yet, we would like to arrange for the veterans to have a special card to swipe that would automatically give them a discount at the register whenever they purchased food.....this is still a work in progress.
Please check our list of needed ongoing food and supplies.
THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT! WE CAN'T DO WHAT WE DO WITHOUT YOU!
Please contact us if you would like to volunteer to pick up items or serve on pantry night.
Over the weekend we had a very good turn out of volunteers. Thank you to everybody that helped at Victory Park and behind the scenes. We are not totally finished yet as we still have kitchen tables and chairs on order from Nebraska Furniture Mart. We thought they would be in today but due to weather conditions they did not come in yet. Maybe tomorrow. When they do we will get them all to Victory as soon as we can and start putting them together.
The pantry we have been operating out of at Victory Park is actually their maintenance room. Therefore that is not available to use as a pantry for an ongoing mission. We are working with Victory Park management on a solution as everybody involved feels some kind of pantry for food and consumables is needed. There have been several groups and a lot of volunteers that want to keep a pantry stocked and operated.
This coming weekend 01/27th-28th we will be finalizing everything and moving the excess stuff into storage to be used for the ongoing mission.
Thank you all for your continued support !

Please check this website before bringing anything to us. We are getting way to many of some things but not enough of others things.
Also we have been receiving some stuff that is less than fair condition. WE WILL NOT USE IT!
IF IT WON'T GO IN MY HOME IT WON'T GO IN THEIRS!
Stained bath mats with the rubber backing coming off is an example. YUCK! Ripped, stained old blankets . Gross! Any furniture from a smokers house or that smells like cat or dog urine . We will not take.
NEW or GENTLY used only!
ALSO
DO NOT DROP ANYTHING OFF AT VICTORY PARK APARTMENTS WITHOUT HEROES INTO HOMES BEING THERE. YOU MUST CHECK WITH US FIRST TO FIND OUT WHAT DAYS AND TIMES WE WILL BE THERE. The apartment manager will turn you away and tell you to contact us. They are far to busy to deal with an influx of donations during regular business hours. Thank you all for your understanding and continued support.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
It is truly an honor to be part of this community. The outpouring of love and support on this mission is beyond outstanding! YOU, our members of this community, are making a tremendous difference in the lives of everyone involved.....veterans, volunteers, and donors. WE are ALL making a difference and changing lives; letting those in need know that there really is someone out there who cares. We wish everyone could see what we see, hear what we hear!!! It really is AMAZING!!
The move in December 2nd was a huge success!! Thanks to this fantastic community, you all knocked in out of the park! Our Veterans received way more than we had ever dreamed of. The mission is far from complete but right now we have stuff in 3 staging rooms at Victory Park. This week we will be organizing all of the extra stuff taking, inventory, and figuring out what is still needed. Once we get all of that done we will put a list back up. We cant thank you all enough for your overwhelming support.
!
This is a community effort and we would love to recognize those who donate. If you would like to be recognized as a very special donor, please let us know. Thank you for your support.
